How to pack a backpack
3 steps
- The hood and side pockets should be filled with smaller items so they can be easily reached. For the side pockets, pay attention to weight distribution on both sides.
- Heavy gear such as a tent, food, and cooking utensils should be packed close to your back.
- Medium-weight items like clothing should be placed in the middle of the backpack, towards the outside.
- Soft items such as a sleeping bag and down gear should be packed at the bottom.
On challenging routes such as alpine trails or steep ascents, the heaviest items should be placed closest to the body’s centre of gravity. To counterbalance, lean slightly forward to maintain stability.
On easier terrain such as flat or walking paths, the heaviest items should be placed closer to the shoulders so that your back remains upright.
